Barriers to oral cancer screening: a focus group study of rural Black American adults

摘要: Objective Mortality from mouth and throat cancer (MTC) is higher among Black Americans than White partially because of late stage detection through screening. The disparity in mortality particularly problematic living rural areas who have limited access to preventative resources. Our study explored barriers screening for MTC Americans. Methods We conducted nine focus groups age 40 years older (N = 80). Results Content coding the transcripts revealed three primary Lack knowledge (e.g., not knowing about symptoms) accounted 31.8% all mentioned, lack resources money health insurance) 25.0% fear diagnosis) 22.9% mentioned. Conclusions We placed these within Theory Planned Behavior conclude that interventions aimed at increasing should first on changing people's attitudes by reducing fear.
