摘要: The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in China has created a major reservoir which water level fluctuates annually by about 30 m, generating drawdown zone of up to 350 km 2 summer. Since construction dam, there been scientific and public interest how use resources environmentally sustainable ways. To this end, with government support, an interna- tional conference was held Chongqing Municipality (China) October 2011 subject conservation ecofriendly utilization wetlands Reservoir. proceedings were subsequently published Journal Normal University. reports are reviewed here context other relevant literature. included papers ecology, ecode- sign ecological engineering, erosion control, plant produc- tion carbon sequestration, phytoremediation pollution, hydrosystem management, others. Several derive from experimental work conducted at research field station Reservoir situated Kaixian County, Municipality. Plant communities declining diversity evolving. Experimental plantings flood-tolerant edible hydrophytes dike-pond system reveal their potential provide eco- nomic returns for farmers, flooding-tolerant trees, such as cypresses, also show promising results stabilizing soils zone. Flood-tolerant natural vary strongly depth composition provides useful indicators revegetation strategies. In region surrounding reservoir, remnant broad-leaved evergreen forests most effective sequestering carbon, within draw- down zone, is mostly stored below ground. There strong aquatic plants removal pollutants, notably N P, means floating beds. Other examples applying ecodesign engineering strategies restoration manage- ment rivers lakes given. Scientific studies have provided valuable advice further evolving condition can be expected pay additional practical dividends.
