摘要: Summary Typically in resource selection studies, the spatial extent of a home range is defined first and then available resources within that perimeter are estimated. However, ranges (or habitats) some animals constrained by linear environmental features (e.g. rivers, shorelines). Traditional estimators often overestimate for such species, which can lead to spurious estimation availability selection. We used synoptic model space use explicitly account species its environment compare with traditional estimators. We endangered Blakiston's fish owl Bubo blakistoni Russian Far East as our example. Mean annual size (± standard error) was more than three times larger when using kernel methods (30·3 ± 15·1 km2) (9·4 ± 2·0 km2, n = 7). Fish owls showed strong areas valleys, closer waterways, patches permanently open water greater channel complexity sites. Synthesis applications. The solves long-standing problem studies because it provides an objective way estimate whose habitat environment. Improvements accuracy estimations identification important across landscapes, development rigorous site-specific or landscape-scale management plans, scientifically defensible conservation threat mitigation measures.
