摘要: Background The unique feeding biology of aphids suggests novel insecticide targets are likely to exist outside the nervous system. We therefore aimed directly test hypothesis that pharmacological inhibition inward rectifier potassium (Kir) channels would result in salivary gland failure and reduced sap ingestion by cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii. Results Kir inhibitors VU041 VU590 length sheath a concentration dependent manner, indicating secretory activity is inhibition. Next, we employed electrical penetration graph (EPG) technique measure impact has aphid biology. Data show foliar application eliminated E1 E2 phases (phloem feeding) all studied. Contact exposure after applications was found be toxic A. gossypii at 72 96 h post-infestation, mortality starvation not acute toxicity. Furthermore, significantly altered behavior aphids, which toxicologically relevant for plant-virus interactions. Conclusion These data suggest critical proper function glands plant justifies future work developing as mechanism aphicides. products like add very minor arsenal compounds simultaneously reduce vector abundance alter behavior. © 2019 Society Chemical Industry.
