摘要: The explosion at Unit 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power station was worstnuclear accident in history. Radioactive fallout from (directly or indir-ectly) a�ected lives hundreds thousands people former SovietUnion and contamination spread throughout Europe. In 19 years since theaccident, scienti®c papers have been published on itsconsequences. this book we tried to summarise vast literature, focusingparticularly long-term consequences theenvironment.There are many historical accounts (e.g., Shcherbak,1989; IAEA, 1991; UNSCEAR, 2000; Mould, Kryshev Ryazantsev, 2000;OECD/NEA, 2002). Whilst focuses primarily longer term impactsof accident, here brie¯y history itsimmediate consequences. particular, aim put within thecontext other (natural man-made) sources radioactivity environ-ment. This chapter also introduces some key concepts units radiation meas-urement risk assessment. Many these will be familiar readers, aretherefore where possible included boxes separate main text.
