摘要: The theory of Quantum Electrodynamics predicts the “spontaneous” production electron-positron pairs in presence strong electric fields. Collisions heavy ions with a combined nuclear charge exceeding value 172 are expected to provide required supercritical field at least transiently. Extensive experimental searches performed about two decades ago, mainly GSI, have confirmed enhancement pair high-Z collisions. short time scales involved, however, prevented an unequivocal confirmation mechanism production. We revisit this problem view recent results from reaction theory. If reactions prolonged lifetime approaching \(10^{-20}\) s can be selected using suitable coincidence conditions, it should possible experimentally verify vacuum decay QED.
