摘要: Most of the water requirement for Madras is met from surface- and ground-water supplies piped in outside city limits. However, as case many cities, a certain proportion population, usually poorest, forced to rely on wells within urban area. A study was therefore carried out gain an idea inorganic quality penetrating shallow (< 20 m thick) alluvial aquifer below city. Two general surveys selected across indicated that relative Indian domestic standards, 93 samples obtained, 25% exceeded Ca limit, 11% Mg 43% total dissolved solids 14% SO4 70% NO3 limit. As indicator biological contamination, high concentrations (up 1040 mg/l) are particularly worrying. detailed survey sites close river also undertaken. High heavy metal were detected, with up 0.42 mg/1, Hg 0.02 Pb 1.82 Cd 1.31 mg/1. Microbes have been found several wells. It clear that, expected, ground grossly polluted.
