Evidence of mid- to late-Holocene explosive rhyolitic eruptions from Chaitén Volcano, Chile

摘要: The 2008 eruption of Chaiten Volcano was widely cited as the first activity at volcano for over 9000 years. However, we have identified evidence from proximal pyroclastic deposits three additional explosive eruptions within past 5000 has therefore produced least five in Holocene, making it among most active volcanoes, terms output, southern part Andean Southern Volcanic Zone. All Holocene homogeneous high-silica rhyolite, with near identical compositions. Based on our sequence, suggest that largest-volume occurred ~4.95 ka, and correlate this Mic2 deposit, which previously thought to originate nearby Michinmahuida Volcano.
