摘要: Non-invasive transcranial high intensity focused ultrasound (HiFUS) therapy given under MRI thermometry and image guidance to awake patients lying within the bore of a 1.5 T scanner (a) thermally ablate brain lesions such as metastases, (b) cause precise ablative in functional disorders, or (c) locally open blood-brain-barrier for targeted therapeutic construct delivery - without radiation risks stereotactic radiotherapy may sound science fiction. Kullervo Hynynen, Finnish-born physicist, Ferenc Jolesz, Hungarian-born neurosurgeon visionary guided surgery, have joined forces at Radiology, Brigham&Women’s Hospital, Boston, they taken every step realize vision above, highly successful collaboration with industry (GE, InSightec, TxSonics). The sophisticated HIFUS instrumentation, supported by profound research data from experimental animals clinical experience extracranial targets (breast fibroadenoma , uterine fibroid), is now coming phase I trial cerebral metastases. It remains be seen whether will find applications diffuse gliomas thermal ablation selected areas glioma tissue, opening constructs enter areas, activating desired areas. prophecy Dr. “this technology put neurosurgeons out business”, not fulfill during our lifetime.
