摘要: Mentha longifolia L. (Lamiaceae) leaves have been traditionally implemented in the treatment of minor sore throat and mouth or irritation by indigenous people Iraq, although compounds responsible for medicinal properties not identified. In present study, an antimicrobial compound was isolated characterized, its biological activity assessed. The characterized from extracted essential oil using different spectral techniques: TLC, FTIR spectra HPLC. Antimicrobial assessed both disc diffusion microdilution method 96 multi-well microtiter plates. A known plant identified as (-) menthol. investigated against seven selected pathogenic non-pathogenic microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, faecalis, pyogenis , Lactobacillus acidophilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa yeast Candida albicans. Menthol at concentrations (1:1, 1:5, 1:10, 1:20) active all tested bacteria except P. aeruginosa, highest inhibitory effect observed S. mutans (zone inhibition: 25.3 mm) method. Minimal concentration MIC values ranged 15.6–125.0 μg/ml, most promising results were aureus (MIC 15.6 μg/ml) while, acidophilus ranked next 31.2 μg/ml). Furthermore, menthol achieved considerable antifungal C. albicans inhibition range: 7.1–18.5 mm; MIC: 125.0). isolation M. validates use this irritation.
