Adolescent Alcoholism and Drug Addiction: The Experience of Parents

摘要: Alcoholism and drug addiction have marked impacts on the ability of families to function. Much literature has been focused adult members a family who present with substance dependency. There is limited research into effects adolescent dependence parenting functioning; little attention paid parents’ experience. This qualitative study looks at parental perspective as they attempted adapt cope dependency in their teenage children. The life adds functioning knowledge when identified client youth opposed an member. Thirty-one caregivers 21 teenagers were interviewed, resulting eight significant themes: (1) finding out about problem; (2) experiences problems escalated; (3) looking for explanations other than dependence; (4) connecting parent’s own history; (5) trying cope; (6) challenges getting help; (7) impact siblings; (8) choosing long-term rehabilitation. Implications this clinical practice are discussed.
