摘要: Synthetic biology seeks to create modular biological parts that can be assembled into useful devices, allowing the modification of systems with greater reliability, at lower cost, speed, and by a larger pool people than has been case traditional genetic engineering. We assess offensive defensive security implications synthetic based on insights leading biologists how technology may develop, projections practicing biosecurity authorities changes in context potential applications biology, joint appraisals policy relevant sources uncertainty. appears have minimal near term, modest advantages medium strengthen capabilities against natural engineered threats enable novel uses long term. To maximize minimize effects despite uncertainty, this essay suggests combination approaches, including community-based efforts, regulation surveillance, further research, deliberate design safety features technology.
