摘要: Event-related potentials (ERPs) are a powerful tool in understanding and evaluating cognitive, affective, motor, sensory processing both healthy pathological samples. A typical ERP recording session takes considerable time but is designed to isolate only 1–2 components. Although this appropriate for most basic science purposes, it an inefficient approach measuring the broad set of neurocognitive functions that may be disrupted neurological or psychiatric disease. The present study provides framework more efficiently multiple neural processes single experimental paradigm through manipulation functionally orthogonal dimensions. We describe general MONSTER (Manipulation Orthogonal Neural Systems Together Electrophysiological Recordings) explain how can adapted investigate variety domains, components, interest. also demonstrate used assess group differences by providing data from implementation younger (18–30 y age) older (65–85 adult This specific assesses 4 separate visual domain: (1) early processing, using C1 wave; (2) shifts covert attention, with N2pc component; (3) categorization, P3 (4) self-monitoring, error-related negativity. primarily described context experiments, could easily use functional magnetic resonance imaging.
