摘要: Dislocations are the main lattice defects responsible for strength and ductility of crystalline solids. The generation new dislocations is an essential aspect crystal defect physics, but a fundamental understanding mechanical conditions which lead to dislocation nucleation has remained elusive. Here, we present criterion motivated from continuum thermomechanical considerations solid undergoing deformation, demonstrate criterion's ability correctly predict via direct atomistic simulations. We further that commonly held notion based on magnitude local stress components incorrect.
