Fruit production, migrant bird visitation, and seed dispersal of Guarea glabra in Panama.

摘要: The relationship between bird visitation and the size of available fruit crop was studied at an understory tree (Guarea glabra Vahl, Meliaceae) in tropical wet forest Barro Colorado Island, Panama Canal Zone. Twelve resident species seven North American migrant fed on Bright orange arilloids (seeds with arils), which were not depleted during normal fruiting period. number individual visitors, visiting species, seeds removed increased linearly crop. proportion did increase crop, indicating that dispersal is a function disproportionate large displays. Four migrants (Myiarchus crinitus, Catharus ustulatus, Vireo olivaceus, Vermivora peregrina) accounted for 70% visits 60% from trees. No visited Guarea as frequently any one these migrants. There no indication single visitor dependent this nutrition, nor upon dispersal. We hypothesize season G. adaptively synchronized northward migration opportunistically frugivorous birds.
