摘要: Complex structures and devices, both natural manmade, are often constructed sequentially. From crystallization to embryogenesis, a nucleus or seed is formed built upon. Sequential assembly allows for initiation, signaling, logical programming, which necessary making enclosed, hierarchical structures. Although biology relies on such schemes, they have not been available in materials science. Here, we demonstrate programmed sequential self-assembly of DNA functionalized emulsions. The droplets initially inert because the grafted strands pre-hybridized pairs. Active initiator then displace one paired thus release its complement, turn activates next droplet sequence, akin living polymerization. Our strategy provides time logic control during process, offers new perspective synthesis materials. Natural complex systems by but this readily synthetic systems. authors program emulsions altering strands.
