Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the stomach : A subset of gastric carcinoma with distinct clinicopathological features and high prevalence of Epstein-Barr virus infection

摘要: Background/aims To evaluate the clinicopathological features of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma stomach in Taiwan. Methodology Of 379 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma, from 1993 to 1996, 6 them were retrospectively studied. Results Five females and one patient was male. Their age ranged 51-75 years a mean 61.5 years. Endoscopically, 2 initially diagnosed as early cancer other 4 advanced cancer. Three had tumors located lower third stomach, while three middle upper third. Two invaded into serosal layer four lesions confined at submucosal muscular layers. Using situ hybridization method, all (100%) positive nuclear Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA signals tumor cells but not surrounding lymphoid stroma non-neoplastic mucosa. Helicobacter pylori found (66.7%) cases. The follow-up period 27 months. free disease. Lymph node involvement mesenteric implantation noted which recurred 1 year after gastrectomy. Conclusions Lymphoepithelioma-like this study revealed female predominance, preferential localization proximal part better prognosis, high association virus infection.
