Hospital board effectiveness: relationships between governing board composition and hospital financial viability

摘要: Abstract OBJECTIVE. Two theories--agency and managerialism--are compared with respect to their usefulness in explaining the role of insiders on hospital board: whether participation enhances or impairs board financial decision making. DATA SOURCES/STUDY SETTING. The study used 1985 governing data for a representative sample acute care California hospitals. STUDY DESIGN. Relationships were examined cross-sectionally between presence absence measures viability while controlling organizational factors system affiliation, ownership, size, region, corporate restructuring. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS. Multiple regression analysis found significant relationships insider (CEO, medical staff) viability. CONCLUSIONS. These results support managerial theory governance by suggesting that CEO staff provide informational advantages board. However, cross-sectional design points need future longitudinal studies order sequence these improved
