Rural Community College Nontraditional Women: Overcoming Educational Barriers

摘要: Community colleges may provide access and opportunity to acquire higher levels of academic education; however, the students' decision persist from semester is contingent upon individuals' life circumstances. are experiencing increased enrollment nontraditional women, especially in vocational technical programs study. Research changing characteristics female students will assist community realizing their mission, by providing direction with planning, implementing, evaluating services designed meet needs this segment student population. The purpose qualitative study was learn more about how women overcome educational barriers a college program researcher also sought bring insights experiences being an adult returning education at rural college. participants included 15 Patrick Henry College Martinsville, Virginia. Through semi-structured interviews, personal overcoming were explored. findings revealed that entered experience apprehension, but sense determination achieve goal for own self esteem significant others (especially children). Participants reported as: financial, conflict role obligations, limited time, self-doubt preparation, which seeking assistance through Student Support Services program.
