摘要: In many Western science systems, funding structures increasingly stimulate academic research to contribute practical applications, but at the same time rise of bibliometric performance assessments have strengthened pressure on academics conduct excellent basic that can be published in scholarly literature. We analyze interplay between these two developments a set three case studies fields chemistry Netherlands. First, we describe how conditions under which chemists work changed since 1975. Second, investigate whether applications become source credibility for individual researchers. Indeed, this turns out catalysis, where connecting with industrial helps steps cycle. Practical yield much less environmental chemistry, application-oriented agendas help acquire funding, not publish prestigious papers or earn peer recognition. biochemistry hardly gaining credibility, as field is still strongly oriented fundamental questions. The differences explained by presence absence powerful upstream end-users, who afford invest promising long term benefits.
