Adding It Up: The Costs and Benefits of Investing In Family Planning and Maternal and Newborn Health

摘要: Caring for the health of women and their babies is essential yet family planning maternal newborn services fall well short needs in developing countries. Using new estimates 2008 this report shows that: an estimated 215 million who want to avoid a pregnancy are not using effective method contraception despite increases use recent years; only about one-half 123 give birth each year receive antenatal delivery care (including routine complications) many get do all components they need; 20 have unsafe abortions three 8.5 need subsequent complications it. New analyses also show that direct benefits meeting both would be dramatic. Unintended pregnancies drop by more than two-thirds from 75 22 per year. Seventy percent deaths averted -- decline 550000 160000. Forty-four 3.5 1.9 million. Unsafe 73% 5.5 (assuming no change abortion laws) number needing medical procedures two The healthy years life lost due disability premature death among newborns reduced 60%.
