Mineralogy and leaching characteristics of beneficiated coal products from Santa Catarina, Brazil

摘要: Abstract Petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical studies have been carried out on beneficiated coal products from mines preparation plants in the Santa Catarina Basin, southern Brazil, to investigate range of characteristics exhibited by materials potential impact their stockpiling storage environment. The coals contain varying proportions vitrinite inertinite macerals, reflectance values ranging 0.44 1.38%. With exception one material blended with peat an external source, they relatively high percentages ash (30–58%) mineral matter (36–66%). consists mainly clay minerals (kaolinite, illite illite/smectite), together 15–25% quartz, up 10% feldspar, 5% calcite and/or dolomite pyrite, around 1% anatase rutile. Bassanite is also present low-temperature derived coals, interaction Ca S associated organic matter. Jarosite formed pyrite oxidation that exposed stockpiles for extended periods. Most trace elements most higher concentrations than average world generally, probably due content. A lower-ash product representing a blend has similar lower elements, but B, Ba, Be, Cd, Ge Mn, which may be component. Interaction fresh water laboratory tests produces leachates near-neutral mildly acid pH values, leaching oxidized, jarosite-bearing strongly leachate, Co, Cu, Ni Zn. Leachates oxidized during would thus expected more adverse environmental such not had opportunity develop.
