Prevalence of pterygium in a population in Northern Japan: the Locomotive Syndrome and Health Outcome in Aizu Cohort Study

摘要: . Purpose:  The aim of the study was to determine prevalence and risk factors for pterygium in a population aged 40–74 years Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. Methods:  Of 4185 citizens towns Minamiaizu-machi Tadami-machi, 2312 (55.2%) gave consent an ocular examination during health examination. Pterygium diagnosed when radially oriented fibrovascular lesion growing over limbus into cornea observed. Eyes with history excision were also pterygium. Prevalence associated investigated. Results:  subjects, 101 (4.4%; 95% confidence interval, 3.6–5.3%) had at least 1 eye. average age (±SD) subjects 64.3 ± 8.0 years. Gender, age, outdoor job smoking examined as possible factors, but only found be significantly logistic regression analysis. Conclusion:  4.4% population. This low rate may due northern latitude these towns. Age pterygium, gender not onset this study.
