摘要: Background This prospective study aimed to assess the extent of spread dye in epidural space and whether it would vary direct proportion volume when injecting two volumes dye. Methods Ten infants, aged 2-36 days (mean +/- SD, 13.30 13.68 days) weighing 1.8-4.5 kg 2.60 0.97 days), who were undergoing major thoracoabdominal surgery under general anaesthesia, studied. At end surgery, radioopaque (omnipaque) 0.5 ml.kg(-1) 1 injected into at a rate ml.2 min(-1). The was studied by taking X-rays after both injections left lateral position. Results There 10 different patterns cases. Uniformly circumferential cylindrical seen only one infant. In others, there segregated patches anterior posterior with or without interspersed spread. variation extent, location density spread, filling defects skipped segments volumes. Back leak along needle track three Statistically, 9.30 3.68 for ml.kg(-1), 11.50 3.03, S, P=0.014; 2.70 2.16, 5.90 3.14 3.59, P=0.006; 3.60 1.58, ml kg(-1) 7.90 2.33 5.88, P=0.001; 8.20 3.71, 9.80 3.54, P=0.006. Doubling doubling occurred patient. variable increase reduction ml.kg-1. probable reasons this mechanism anaesthesia presence such are discussed. Conclusions is difference quantitative as well qualitative patients same patient statistically significant increases number segments, circumferential, locations 1.0 group. Both improve higher but not volume. has better than chance producing adequate anaesthesia.
