摘要: The Crow Honeyeater (Gymnomyza aubryana) is a critically endangered bird, endemic to the main island of New Caledonia, but it poorly known owing its elusive nature. We conducted playback surveys assess distribution, habitat preferences and vocal activity species. Honeyeaters responded well playback, with response rates reaching 67% at times. Our revealed two distinct populations, separated by ~250 km: one in north other, larger population south. range northern appears be very small. Presence species was linked rainforests growing on oligotrophic soils, primarily ultramafic substrates. Approximately 315–700 km2 suitable for remains, corresponding maximum estimated 315–700 breeding pairs. size much smaller than previously assumed, comprehensive management will required ensure survival.
