摘要: : Many mammalian carnivores are in local or global decline. To slow this process, continued planning to protect these species is warranted, Still, the data bases that we have at our disposal do not adequately document population requirements for space scales appropriate conservation planning. illustrate problem, collected published 214 censuses of carnivores. We tested a relationship between number individuals censused and size study site entire set. conducted same test each family, which obtained sufficient qualifying census With areas ranging from less than 10 km2 over 40,000 km2, significant regression (p < .001; r2= 76%) sample as whole. examined distribution densities with increasing area found was constant but decreased noticed numbers per census-area increased slope (m 1). also sizes were unevenly distributed Only 7% studies regions larger 10,000 km2. It remains unclear what extent how density decreases scale expect extrapolations small ones likely underestimate carnivores.
