摘要: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). Despite low prevalence CAP caused by methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), patients often receive empirical antibiotic therapy providing coverage for MRSA such as vancomycin or linezolid. An early differentiation between and can help to reduce use unnecessary antibiotics. The objective this study was identify candidate biomarkers that discriminate pneumococcal from staphylococcal pneumonia. A genome-wide transcriptional analysis lung peripheral blood performed in murine models infection identified an interferon signature specifically associated with infection. Prediction built using a support vector machine (SVM) Monte Carlo cross-validation (MCCV), combination interferon-induced chemokines CXCL9 CXCL10 serum concentrations set best sensitivity, specificity predictive power enabled accurate discrimination performance these further validated independent cohort mice. This highlights potential adjunctive diagnostic tool could facilitate prompt correct pathogen-targeted patients.
