Community perceptions and response to flood risks in Nyando District, Western Kenya

摘要: In Kenya, the ability of local people to resist impact disasters has not been given adequate attention. A descriptive cross sectional study sought investigate community perceptions and responses flood risks in low high risk areas Nyando District, Western Kenya. total 528 households, six government officials have project managers Community Based Organizations (CBOs) Non Governmental (NGOs) were interviewed. Additionally, seven Focus Group Discussions(FGDs) involving three women, two male teacher groups conducted. Data analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Program. The Chi-square test was used determine associations di'erences between variables. study, 83% respondents aware Traditional Flood Knowledge (TFK) 80% acknowledged its use. Perception is influenced by several variables, most notably past experience major floods having survived them. Residents had signfficantly higher levels awareness use traditional knowledge. they more nature related health exposed appeared better prepared future risk. They were, however, dependent on external aid. On other hand, residents living area reported success with their response mechanisms.
