摘要: Scholars and practitioners have long pinned their hopes for democratization in Africa on civil society groups. Yet, these groups face tremendous barriers limitations from state nonstate actors alike, as well internal contradictions that hamper abilities to build democracy. This chapter unpacks contradictions, focusing particular how is immersed neopatrimonial politics across the continent, while remaining essential move away neopatrimonialism more democratic politics. How can actors, who are so clearly a part of at large, transform dominant oligarchic pattern continent within? In grappling with this conundrum, we extrapolate three cases representing spectrum progress. These are: Ghana, continental success story; Uganda, where remains openly hostile reform; Nigeria, stuck somewhere between reform oligarchy.
