Effects of CeO2 nanoparticles on production and physicochemical characteristics of extracellular polymeric substances in biofilms in sequencing batch biofilm reactor

摘要: Abstract Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are a major component of biofilms that act as gel-like matrix, binding the cells together to form their three-dimensional structure. The effects ceria nanoparticles (CeO 2 NPs) on production and physicochemical characteristics EPS in sequencing batch biofilm reactor were investigated. Total production, including loosely bound (LB-EPS) tightly (TB-EPS), increased by 35.41% compared control tests without CeO NPs. Protein 47.02% 58.83% (TB-EPS) after 50 mg/L NP exposure. Three-dimensional excitation–emission fluorescence spectra revealed tyrosine aromatic protein-like formed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results indicated susceptibility –OH –NH hydroxyl amine groups Exposure NPs reduced flocculating capacity LB-EPS (51.78%) TB-EPS (17.14%), consistent with decreased zeta potential.
