A Critical Review of Representative Sources on Multicultural Epistemology

摘要: During the 1990s, several essays and books appeared that between them delineated domain of “multicultural” epistemology, these are summarized critically assessed: James Scheurich Michelle Young (Educ Res 26(4): 4–16, 1997); Banks 22(5): 4–14, 1993, Educ 27(7): 4–17, 1998); Patricia Hill Collins (Black feminist thought: knowledge, consciousness, politics empowerment. Routledge, New York, 1990); Dolores Delgado Bernal (Har Rev 68(4): 555–582, Belenky et al. (Women’s ways knowing: development self, voice, mind. Basic Books, 1986); Molefi Kete Asante (Kemet, Afrocentricity knowledge. Africa World Press, Trenton, 1990). It is argued although sources make claims about they fail to clear what various alternative epistemologies canvas actually postulate knowledge-warranting practices advocate; also address in detail aspects traditional epistemology defective (apart from fact it was produced by individuals drawn dominant social group). Nevertheless, valid sociological points (e.g., mainstream educational research tends neglect concerns life-experiences minority groups) psychological ones “ways knowing” cultural – but sociology psychology do not constitute epistemology. The final part this chapter takes form a reaction issues raised, written other co-editor volume.
