摘要: Pyrite decay is arguably the major problem in geological and palaeontological conservation, as it can cause total destruction valuable specimens. Various methods have been devised since 19th century to treat prevent with different degrees of success. Nevertheless, conservation large fossils at risk pyrite remains an unsolved issue, because a feasible method for maintaining them controlled microclimate that suitable specimens on public display has remained elusive. This paper describes study carried out investigate alterations developed fossil palm collection Museum Geology Palaeontology Padova (Italy), already treated several years before. Results X-ray powder diffraction Raman spectroscopy performed samples collected from confirmed were due decay. The indoors (inside showcases Hall itself) outdoors was monitored one year its possible relation damage observed. measured thermo-hygrometric conditions exceeded recommended thresholds prevention oxidation indicated high process. demonstrates treatment alone not sufficient be ineffective without proper management microclimatic under which are preserved.
