摘要: Introduction Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is thought to have a cumulative effect in time on seizure frequency reduction. There also might be other variables than reduction of order determine VNS efficacy. In this study we describe the long-term outcome first group vagus patients with pharmacoresistant epilepsy at Medisch Spectrum Twente, The Netherlands. Methods This descriptive prospective included 19 patients, 11 males and 8 females, aged 17–46 years epilepsy. They had received 3–16 (mean 9) different anti-epileptic drugs were not eligible for surgical resection an epileptic focus. A stimulator was implanted period April 1999–October 2001. Follow-up ranges from 2 6 4 years). Efficacy measured as percentage change rate during 1 year then after each follow-up compared 5 months baseline before implantation. Results Mean 1–6 was, respectively, 14% (n = 19), 25% 29% 16), 15), 43% 50% 7). Because two able start living without supervision. One patient died possibly result SUDEP. Four no apparent frequency. Two them their removed. however significantly reduced post-ictal periods new pulse generator when battery depleted. switched off due adverse effects, even though there positive his six medication regimen changed by adding one drug, significant Adverse effects hoarseness coughing stimulation. temporary paralysis left vocal cord. Conclusion We think that effective treatment its persists follow-up. Our results suggest should considered only variable importance it worthwhile look measures.
