Carcinoma of the pyriform sinus. An analysis of treatment results and patterns of failure.

摘要: A retrospective review of 169 patients with carcinoma the pyriform sinus was accomplished for a ten-year-period from 1964 to 1974. Of 169, 80 (47%) were treated low dose preoperative radiation and partial laryngopharyngectomy (PLP), 57 (34%) total laryngectomy-partial pharyngectomy (TLP), 32 (19%) palliative radiation, surgery or chemotherapy. Act,arial five-year-survival 31% all cases, 59% PLP group, 21% TLP group 4% palliation group. Eighty 90% relapses occurred within two years. The primary and/or nodal failure rates 23, 37 78%, respectively PLP, groups while distant metastasis 15, 34% three groups. Sites differed relatively high rate contralateral neck metastases (23%) in an overwhelming number ipsilateral failures (78%) Retreatment resulted few salvages (15%) significant fatal complications (26%). cause death tumor related most cases.
