A hermeneutic phenomenological enquiry into homelessness

摘要: Research into homelessness has been predominantly quantitative in design, solution-focused and may have effectively concealed the phenomenon itself. This study utilised a hermeneutic phenomenological methodology, based on Martin Heidegger’s philosophy, to reveal some essential, constitutive characteristics of homelessness. In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with six participants accessed through service provider for homeless persons. Passing Time Taking Care emerged as examined deepen our understanding meaning ground itself (Heidegger, 1962). revealed boredom mood disclosed daily challenges faced filling or wasting time when homeless. It is that profound boredom, persons exist an empty self, suspended world. something participants’ capacity take care themselves access from others. their relationships self others anxiety such evoke. Homeless struggle profoundly emotional containment either internally externally. They state deep internal turmoil rejecting, excluding recommended government agencies services adopt more inclusive, creative, caring attitudes policies underpinned by need order become integrated cohesive self. Finally, it psychotherapists are actively involved design implementation programmes collaboratively work towards re-integration mainstream society.
