摘要: This paper seeks to understand how US labor unions - once key institutions in American political and economic life can re-emerge as important viable organizations. Building on the extensive literature "social embeddedness" of activity well union revitalization, we hypothesize that where local are able rebuild linkages other groups, they should be successful at revitalizing themselves organizationally. Where fail embed their broader communities notwithstanding genuine efforts launching new strategies rebuilding own organizations likely stagnate. The reports results two matched pair case studies building trade locals Boston, Massachusetts, Portland, Oregon. One set cases focuses Pipetrades cities. cities' Carpenters unions. To gain more objective information unions' embeddedness networks employed a survey identified approximately 100 industry stakeholder including builders, architects, engineers, major property owners, neighborhood environmental state governments, banks lenders. We received responses from 46% contacted which were conduct series network analyses complement our qualitative research.
