Review of challenges and opportunities for dairy cattle farming under mixed system of Homa Bay County, Western Kenya

摘要: The objective of this review was to determine challenges and opportunities facing dairy cattle production in Homa Bay County, which lies within the Lake Victoria basin. Three systems were included: farms keeping indigenous breeds; crosses exotic breeds breeds. Both primary secondary data collected using questionnaires, key informant interview, published grey literature sources institutional websites. Quantitative analyzed descriptive statistics One-way analysis variance used as inferential at 5% level significance, while qualitative summarized themes. Among different raised, milk predominantly produced by type. Most owned about 4 acres land, with owning 7 herds pure kept 3 cattle, respectively. Daily yield from 18 L, breed 1.7 L. Milk sold neighbours, local markets for household consumption. Farmers faced regard quality unavailability feeds during drought periods, controlling livestock diseases, information breeding services. County government its development partners implemented projects on productivity: fixed-time artificial insemination project introduction Brachiaria grass is resistant have high protein content. This report presents findings are important policy making farming lessons how public private sector partnership can alleviate farming. Key words: Challenges opportunities, farming, western Kenya.
