摘要: Management of epilepsy in the elderly requires understanding unique biochemical and pharmacologic characteristics this patient population. Accurate assessment seizures identification syndromes, thorough neurologic to define etiology, comprehensive evaluation patient's health living situation are necessary for informed management decisions. Challenges treatment include concomitant diseases, polypharmacy with accompanying drug interactions, changes physiology, such as renal clearance hepatic function that alter absorption, protein binding, metabolism, elimination. Elderly patients declining intellectual function, motor impairment, or altered sensory may be especially susceptible dose-related CNS side effects antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). Drugs prescribed illnesses hypertension, cardiovascular disease, infections, behavioral problems, gastrointestinal disturbances distribution, metabolism AEDs, an adverse impact on efficacy increased occurrence effects. The AEDs induce other drugs, resulting decline target response. Addition AED medical regimen careful review all drugs. Optimal care includes use free levels monitor concentrations, dose selection, sensitivity social problems occur
