摘要: Abstract Over about one hundred years aviation has evolved from an adventurous enterprise of audacious pioneers to a large scale industry providing high performance defense aircraft and world wide transportation. In even shorter period, initial rocket developments gave rise modern producing space launchers satellites allowing transportation, telecommunications, global positioning, earth observation exploration. The technological advances could not have been made without progress in aerospace science engineering. Aerodynamics Institute at RWTH important player this scientific quest. With Theodore Von Karman as its first director, the institute rapidly became leader field. On 100th anniversary, it is fit examine accomplished some key areas. This article focuses on combustion because importance for propulsion. By looking back Karman’s papers, other studies period situated middle last century interesting delineate advances. 60 years starting 1950s where was writing set articles fundamentals aerothermochemistry laminar flame propagation, progressed remarkable fashion. Advances theoretical level accompanied by significant experimentation with new laser diagnostics, speed imaging numerical data processing. computational had profound effect research field engineering applications. Starting list central issues encountered combustion, are illustrated examining selected number topics interest propulsion: Flame structures detailed modeling flames, Turbulent Cryogenic flames transcritical Combustion dynamics, Computational Dynamics.
