摘要: Abstract Attempted explanations of the 26-month zonal wind oscillation in equatorial stratosphere are critically examined. Explanations terms subharmonic response, ‘vacillation,’ or a resonant mode rejected. Some indirect astronomical and terrestrial evidence fluctuation solar ultraviolet emission is noted, and, view inadequacy other explanations, appears to be probable cause. A simple derivation given thermal geostrophic fields which propagate downward by eddy radiative transfer through from layer somewhere above 25 km periodically heated, presumably source period.
