摘要: Aim To investigate incidence, reasons, risk factors and outcomes for inappropriate use of urinary catheters in hospitalized elderly patients. Methods The prospective study enrolled 321 patients aged 65 years older with a catheter placed within 24 h hospitalization. Collected data included characteristics use, reasons mortality, length hospital stay, time to first removal catheter, remaining place at discharge, catheter-associated tract infections complications, change activities daily living, new admission nursing home after discharge. Results The 418 was observed. Among these total 1958 catheter-days, 1035 (52.8%) catheter-days were patients. Inappropriate occurred mostly women surgical patients, associated initially lack medical documentation. “Convenience care” the most common reason use. significant predictor longer delayed timing increased rate catheterization incidence catheter-related decline living. Conclusions The highlights considerable percentage its association adverse Efforts improve quality documentation by clinicians emphasize education caregivers are necessary reduce Geriatr Gerontol Int 2015; 15: 1235–1241.
