摘要: Studies of the distribution suspended particulate matter in waters over Hueneme, Redondo, Newport, and La Jolla submarine canyons off southern California are combined with analyses recordings canyon-floor currents to evaluate influence on seaward dispersal fine, terrigenous sediment. The canyon surveys were undertaken during fall winter months 1971 1973 when suspended-sediment concentrations composition mainland shelf controlled principally by terrigenous-sediment supply. Consequently, particle at all levels generally increased toward coast; highest values, exceeding 6 mg per 1, present Newport Hueneme areas because relative proximity large rivers. vertical is influenced strongly density structure water column slope, sharply bounded, midwater, turbidity maxima well developed where sediment supply comparatively large. Nepheloid layers ranged from a few meters >200 m thickness peak 5 7 1 inner within steep-walled, headward portions each canyon. Although nepheloid layer characteristic component suspensate sampled areas, maximum
