摘要: Summary Protected areas such as nature reserves have been found to be effective in preventing habitat destruction and protecting ecosystems within their borders. Recent studies however extensive loss of tropical forest around protected areas, vastly contributing increase the levels ecological isolation. Using high-resolution satellite data we investigated isolation trend occurring W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex West Africa. A land-cover change analysis was performed for period 1984–2002: savanna vegetation extension were derived a 30 km peripheral buffer. Sample regions buffer also analysed using selected spatial indicators quantify temporal trends fragmentation. Implications relative capacity conserve biodiversity discussed through calculation species richness (SRC). More than 14.5% lost WAP while 0.3% converted inside complex. The degree fragmentation remnant has drastically increased. Despite effectiveness park conservation programme, SRC approach that is decreasing its potential richness. This process mainly due rapid extended agricultural expansion taking place better understanding dynamics consideration development needs are key variables achieve goals areas.
