Where does blood go? Prospective observational study of red cell transfusion in north England

摘要: Abstract Objective: To collect population based information on transfusion of red blood cells. Design: Prospective observational study over 28days. Setting: Hospital banks in the north England (population 2.9million). Main outcome measures: Indications for transfusion, number units given, and age sex recipients. Participants: All patients who received a cell during period. Data completed by hospital bank staff. Results: The destination 9848 was recorded (97% expected use). In total 9774 were transfused: 5047 (51.6%) given to medical patients, 3982 (40.7%) surgical 612 (6.3%) obstetric gynaecology patients. Nearly half (49.3%) all is female recipients, mean recipients individual 62.7 years. most common indications hip replacement (4.6% transfused) coronary artery bypass grafting (4.1%). Haematological disorders accounted 15.5% use. Overall use 4274 per 100 000 year. Conclusion: east more than are transfused indications. Demand increases with age. With anticipated changes structure demand will increase 4.9% 2008.
