摘要: Two classes of explanations for covariation between activity level and metabolic rate among conspecifics have been proposed. First, individual-level variation in exhibited during the measurement should covary with routine because movement increases respiration (a methodological relationship). Second, energetic-based hypotheses posit relationships individual measured under more natural conditions baseline measures rate, other behavioral, physiological, life-history traits (functional relationships). Here, we examined these potential behavior mud crab (Panopeus herbstii). Specifically, tested (1) an effect chambers (activitychamber) on (RMR), (2) mesocosms that mimicked field (activitymesocosm) standard (SMR). To test context dependence, assessed both activity-metabolic absence presence predation threat from toadfish (Opsanus tau) form waterborne chemical cues. Individual activitymesocosm RMR was repeatable over time. In support a relationship, differences were partially explained by activitychamber. After accounting this SMR inversely related to activitymesocosm, supporting allocation model predicts compete finite energy reserves. We found no evidence dependence either relationship. Thus, our study emphasizes importance considering artifacts elucidating functional energetics.
