摘要: The knowledge of the areas inhabited by a species within its distribution range and connections among patches are critical pieces information for successful conservation actions. internal structure extent occurrence (EO) is almost always unknown, even “well-known” flagship species. We developed methodology to infer area occupancy (AO) EO using limited available data. present here results three years project funded European Union develop high-resolution models habitat suitability 281 medium- large-sized African mammals across whole continent. existing literature was reviewed all data on geographic environmental preferences selected were collected. For each species, these then expressed in terms key variables as GIS layers at resolution 1 km2 over entire AO obtained merging ecological needs values region identified EO. evaluated through direct field work four countries (Morocco, Cameroon, Uganda, Botswana) chosen representatives diversity Africa. More than 81% had positive true skill statistics (TSS) values, indicating performing better random. Rigorous modeling procedures supported ad-hoc evaluation allowed production useful applications.
