Mental health and quality of life in deaf pupils

摘要: In the past decade, living conditions of hearing impaired children have been changing due to new technologies and mainstreaming in schools. The majority population-based studies deaf pupils were conducted before these changes started take place. present study aimed evaluate current situation regarding aspects mental health and, for first time, quality life a representative sample pupils. stems from population 145,000 attending ninth grades during school years 2003-2005 Upper Austria. From 186 with bilateral impairment at least 40 dB registered centre special education sensory impairments, 99 performance IQ above 70 included study. Parents teachers completed strengths difficulties questionnaire (SDQ), while parents administered inventory assessment adolescents (ILC). Results indicated that scored significantly higher on SDQ than their counterparts normative samples according both parent teacher ratings. Differences most marked regard conduct problems, emotional peer less hyperactivity/inattention. While had generally positive view children's life, provided more complex picture, stressing areas dissatisfaction. Mental found be unrelated child's degree deafness.
