摘要: Melomys burtoni and M. cervinipes naturally occur in habitats adjacent to sugarcane crops north Queensland, have been trapped within crops, are potentially damaging crops. However, little is known about their biology pest status this information needed by the industry for development of a sustainable management programme these rodents. Field studies were undertaken between Tully Innisfail far determine extent which either or both species inhabit examine crop. diagnostic approaches developed which, when blind tested using molecular techniques, proved 100% accurate in-field discrimination two species. Based on field trapping, be rare should not regarded as industry. In contrast, recorded significant numbers cane, found feed cane and, crop stage 5 (canopy closure harvest) responsible damage ~5% stalks. colonise at later stages than other major rodent, Rattus sordidus. The highest proportion reproduction juvenile recruitment also occurs development. late colonisation means that Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy already place R. sordidus directly transferable burtoni. If an effective IPM developed, further research required population dynamics dispersal populations production system Queensland.
