摘要: AIMS: To examine the key socio-demographic characteristics of adult smokers in New Zealand based on 1996 census data. METHODS: Data were obtained from Census Populations and Dwellings smoking status variables. Age standardised prevalence rates calculated. RESULTS: Of population aged 15 years over, 23.7% reported that they regular smokers. Maori have highest (40.5%) peak rate is 55% among young women 25-29 years. Pacific Island people, particularly males, higher than Europeans, while Asians, for males three to four times females. People with no qualifications, who are unemployed or earning less $30,000 per year, high parities also relatively rates. CONCLUSION: The groups highly heterogeneous there substantial scope focusing tobacco control interventions those prevalence.
