Vocabulary Growth: Dual Language Learners at Risk for Language Impairment

摘要: Purpose This research project examined the vocabulary growth patterns of typically developing (TD) Cantonese-English dual language learners (DLLs) and their peers who are at risk for impairment. Method Two studies were done. Study 1 concurrent validity a pilot screening measure, Kai Ming Vocabulary Test, that was designed preschool DLLs. Participants 53 children learned Cantonese as first (L1) English second (L2). Their scores on Test in relation to sample measures, including number different words mean length utterance, L1 L2. 2 24 TD DLL preschoolers DLLs impairment (At-Risk group). Each child tested 3 times during an academic year. Results showed children's (n = 53) significantly correlated with measures each language. In 2, hierarchical linear models used compare At-Risk groups. group had lower receptive relatively higher L2 expressive gains. Conclusions Children likely continue have knowledge compared peers. The trajectories provide valuable information early identification intervention.
